Four days to discover Cornwall’s spring gardens

All within one hours drive from Lewinnick Lodge

Some of the best gardens to visit on your spring break to Cornwall in 2022

Spring in Cornwall is a magical time – from the wildflowers lining the hedgerows, to the sunnier spells of weather, it’s the perfect place to shrug off winter and welcome in a new season.

It’s also a great time to book that last-minute getaway before the busy summer season hits, so you can still enjoy empty beaches, clearer roads and non-peak prices.

The best part of spring, however, is that our array of glorious gardens start waking up from their winter slumbers. From botanical wonderlands to wildflower meadows, there are numerous iconic and historic gardens to visit in Cornwall, and you don’t want to miss them.

Here, we’ve highlighted some of the best gardens to visit on your spring break to Cornwall in 2022.

Lost Gardens of Heligan

Distance: 21 miles / 44 minutes by car

Known today for its stunning woodlands, beautiful Victorian gardens and variety of sub-tropical plants, the Lost Gardens of Heligan were once exactly that – lost.

It wasn’t until 30 years ago that a discovery led to what we see there now. Hidden by brambles since the time of WWI, the gardens’ restoration was initially done on a shoestring budget, but is now considered one of the most iconic places to visit in Cornwall.

Less than 45 minutes by car from Lewinnick Lodge, discover this incredible landmark near St Austell and spend the day enjoying manicured gardens alongside wild woodlands and sub-tropical tree walks. With its own café and kitchen, as well as sculptures from local artists, there’s a little something here for everyone.

Eden Project

Distance: 20 miles / 39 minutes by car

Once a former clay pit, the Eden Project is now an internationally-famous collection of biomes that houses thousands of plant species and the world’s largest indoor rainforest.

It’s not all indoors, though; outside, find extensive gardens, contemporary artworks and performances held throughout the year. Today, there’s even a zipline that runs across the whole crater.

Conservation and education are at the heart of this project, connecting people with the natural world, and there are plenty of things to explore while on site. Immerse yourself in the scents and sounds of this popular destination, and don’t forget to visit the Biome kitchen for hand-made pizza and burritos.

Trewithen Gardens

Distance: 16 miles / 32 minutes

Trewithen is a beautifully-quintessential English garden, which also boasts rare plant species from around the world. Just minutes from Truro, and close to our sister venue The Plume of Feathers, it’s a springtime feast for the eyes.

Explore the gravelled pathways that take you through the 30 acres of woodlands and gardens; the magnolias bloom throughout march and colour pops up everywhere at this time of year.

The Plant Centre is now open, too, after its winter closure – with everything from rare trees to shrubs, grown from the garden. The large manor house also welcomes visitors, and The Tea Shed cafe serves simple, fresh, local food throughout the day.

Lamorran Gardens

Distance: 28 miles / 56 mins by car

If you love sub-tropical gardens, Lamorran is a paradise by the sea. This Italian-inspired garden sits on Cornwall’s beautiful Roseland peninsula, with views of the ocean for a truly Mediterranean feel.

With woodland, temples, archways and even a Japanese-style garden to explore, it’s a haven on the coast. Flowers aren’t the priority here (but you’ll find plenty of them), and this garden is particularly celebrated for its stunning foliage.

Note that the season starts on 1st April, with the on-site café – La Terrazza – open again for light refreshments and drinks on 6th April.
