Green travel tips: Our guide to sustainable travel in Cornwall

Wondering how to make the most of sustainable travel in Cornwall? Despite the general view that you need a car to get around, there are actually multiple other ways to make the most of your time here without getting behind the wheel.

And why wouldn’t you? With the increasing impact of climate change on our stunning Cornish landscapes, every alternative journey we take to reduce our carbon footprint is a step in the right direction.

That’s why we’ve pulled together some of our best eco-friendly travel tips, to help you not only have the best time during your visit, but also protect this beautiful part of the world for future generations.

Explore at your own pace

One of the big arguments for car travel is the speed of getting from A-to-B; but, don’t forget, you’re on holiday! It’s time to explore at your own pace – and one of the best ways to do that? Cycling.

We love exploring the local coast path and surrounding countryside on two wheels, and today, thanks to schemes like Beryl Bikes, it’s really easy to pick up an electric bike in town that can take you miles in just a couple of hours.

Nearby you’ll find great cycling spots like the Camel Trail, a popular 18-mile cycle route from Bodmin to Padstow. Make the most of the breathtaking views and stop in at Camel Valley Vineyard for some local wine tasting.

Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, you’ll find plenty of routes to match your level, and a whole list of dedicated trails right here. For a more challenging ride, take on some of Cornwall’s rugged coastal paths and embrace the raw beauty of the region your own way.

Tip: Finish your cycle with a well-earned cold beer right here at Lewinnick Lodge, soaking up the views over the Atlantic Ocean from our cliffside terrace.

Make the most of public transport

You might need to make a couple of changes to get where you want to go, but our local public transport network offers a variety of ways to help you achieve sustainable travel in Cornwall. With local bus services covering much of the county, you’ll find direct routes from Newquay to popular tourist destinations like St. Ives, Falmouth, and Penzance. Right now, it’s just £2 per journey – making it easy to hop on a bus and explore the coastline, beaches, and hidden gems across the region.

From Newquay, you can also take a train that will connect you to the Cornish mainline at Par, with direct routes from there running between Plymouth and Penzance. Cornwall’s branch lines (such as the Falmouth or St Erth lines) offer charmingly rural journeys that help you get that bit closer to some of Cornwall’s best beauty spots.

Tip: Here at Lewinnick Lodge, we’re just a short journey from the town’s bus and train stations, making it a convenient stop for a sustainably-minded traveller. Ask our reception team for updated info on times!

Wander the coast on two feet

Cornwall’s iconic coastline is just one of the many reasons explorers come to visit the Duchy – and it also boasts almost 300 miles of the popular South West Coast Path. It’s one of the longest and most scenic walking routes in the UK, and the best way to immerse yourself in the real beauty of Cornwall.

From the Lodge, you don’t need to even think about getting into a car; just head out from our doorstep and you’ll be on it in minutes, emission-free. Take in the panoramic sea views, rugged cliffs, and hidden coves as you hike from village to village, stopping for a break at local cafes or beaches along the way.

Tip: You can also check out some of our favourite coastal walks with pub stops, here.

Share the load

We know Cornwall is a big county, and, while some areas are reachable by bike or public transport, there may be times when a car is the most convenient option – and there’s no getting around it. So, why not try looking at lift shares instead? By joining up with others to get to where you need to go, you’ll be taking at least one extra car off the road every time.

Here in Cornwall, you can join The Pasty Connection – one of the most popular car-sharing communities in the county. This group allows you to link up with people travelling all over the country, both in and out of Cornwall, making your journey more sustainable (and sometimes completely free!).

Tip: It’s also worth checking out car-sharing apps like BlaBlaCar or Liftshare, which are becoming increasingly used in Cornwall. It’s the perfect way to meet fellow travellers, share costs, and lower your environmental impact.
