Step into spring in Cornwall with our guide

There’s nowhere quite like spring in Cornwall – and you don’t just have to take our word for it. From the rugged moorlands to ancient hedgerows and clifftops, the vibrant hues of budding flowers and greenery are just starting to touch the landscape after the long, mizzly winter.

The days are stretching out and the sunsets (and sunrises – if you’re up early enough!) are a thing of dreams. So, to help you make the most of your visit to Cornwall this spring, here’s our handy guide on what to expect.

Beautiful gardens

Cornwall boasts a number of stunning gardens around the county, each which start to come into their own at this time of year. It’s thanks to Cornwall’s milder climate that we tend to see an early and vibrant bloom compared to other parts of the UK, making this the perfect pit-stop for a weekend getaway.

Notable gardens include the Lost Gardens of Heligan (St Austell), Trebah and Glendurgan (Falmouth) and Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens (Penzance). Rich in history, and with diverse plant collections, these tranquil corners of Cornwall offer a respite from the hustle-and-bustle of the everyday, and connect you with nature again after the cold months of winter.

At Goldolphin House, near Penzance, don’t miss the chance to wander woodlands carpeted with bluebells as temperatures start to rise.

Adventure hub

There’s no doubt that Cornwall is a hub for adventure-seekers year-round – from the big winter swells enjoyed by surfers and storm-watchers, to the miles of coast path to explore, no matter the weather.

But, sometimes, it’s nice to be a little more comfortable when you’re doing it! That’s why spring is a great time to make the most of these outdoor adventure activities. There are still some big waves around, but with warmer, sunnier spells it’s far more tempting to wiggle into a wetsuit.

The coastline, stretching more than 350 miles, also comes alive with flora and fauna as this season gets underway, and it’s the perfect time to spot cliff-nesting birds on your South West Coast Path hikes. From April, you might even have the chance to spot puffins off the coast of Padstow! If you’re not sure where to start, you can find some great circular walks on the iWalk Cornwall app.

Exciting events

Over the coming months, we’re excited to see some of our favourite annual festivities come back to Cornwall, with events that celebrate the county’s rich culture, history, and foodie scene. Here are some highlights to mark you won’t want to miss:

  • St Piran’s Day (5th March): This one-day festival honours St. Piran, the patron saint of tin miners and one of the most important saints in Cornish culture. With celebrations across Cornwall, from Penzance to Bude, enjoy the local parades and festivals throughout the day to mark this special occasion.
  • Cornwall Spring Flower Show (5th and 6th April): Dubbed the ‘Chelsea of the South West’, Cornwall’s Spring Flower Show returns to the Royal Cornwall Showground in April. From workshops and competitions, to exhibitors and traders, there’s plenty to see for for gardeners of all levels.
  • Porthleven Food Festival (2nd – 4th May): This annual, award-winning three-day festival in Porthleven is a haven for food lovers. Expect culinary demonstrations, food and craft stalls, and live music around this historic harbour – fun for all ages and appetites!
  • Helston Flora Day (8th May): This ancient festival is held in the market town of Helston. From early morning, couples dance through the town, entering homes and shops to drive out the darkness of winter and welcome the light of spring. The festivities include various dances throughout the day, with revellers donning ballgown attire for a vibrant and colourful spectacle.
