Windy walks and winter wildlife
Cornwall boasts spectacular coastal views from more than 600 miles of coast path, and walkers can expect an abundance of wildlife in the cooler months. Look out for everything from dolphins to some of the Duchy’s rarest birds – and, don’t forget, it’s also seal breeding season, making it the perfect time to see those fluffy little pups!
If you want to get away from the coast and head inland, pack a picnic and try your hand at hiking Bodmin Moor’s highest point. We guarantee the views from Rough Tor are well worth the climb.
Watching the waves roll in
One of our favourite things to do each winter is watch those massive waves roll in each time there’s a storm – whether it’s from the comfort of Lewinnick’s cliff-top terrace, or (safely) bracing yourself on the beach.
But did you know it’s also a surfer’s paradise at this time of year? Cornwall is home to some of the best surf spots in the UK and, as storm swells hit throughout the season, those itching to get in the water can expect barrels-galore and endless days of decent surf.
Sunsets with style
No matter what time of year it is, Cornwall arguably has some of the best sunset locations in the UK (if you’re wondering what it looks like from Lewinnick’s cliff-top terrace, just slide through our Instagram!).
In winter, expect crisp, striking colours across an ice-blue sky as you huddle up under a blanket, warm coffee in hand. Once the sun sets, head back to The Plume for a hearty pub meal by the fire, or gaze at the stars from your ocean-facing room at Lewinnick Lodge.
A hub of activity
Contrary to popular belief, Cornwall is a hub of activity through the winter months, with a myriad of year-round attractions to enjoy. With the winter festivals and seasonal events in between, there’s always something to do, even if you’re not the outdoorsy type.
So, why not head to the Eden Project for a spot of ice skating amid the iconic biomes, or try your hand at gin-making at Tarquin’s Gin School in St Ives? There are also a number of stunning gardens (including Truro’s Trelissick – just a short drive from both of our venues) that are still open for those quiet strolls.
It’s also the perfect time to nab a seat at some of Cornwall’s most popular eateries and foodie destinations, while the crowds are small. If you’re not sure where to start, check out the Hidden Hut at Porscatho, open every day from 11am-3pm.
